Here’s a Canadian pressing of Miriam Makeba’s “The Magic Of Makeba” from 1966, capturing the South African vocalist at the peak of her international acclaim. This RCA Victor release came during a remarkable period when Makeba had become a global sensation following her collaborations with Harry Belafonte and her powerful performances that introduced Western audiences to African musical traditions. The album showcases her incredible vocal range across jazz standards and traditional African songs, including her haunting rendition of “Sunrise, Sunset” and the politically charged “A Piece of Ground,” which spoke to her experience as an exile from apartheid South Africa.
